The peeps have arrived! Our first batch of Charming Chickens, or broilers, are now in our brooder, and we finally feel like the long winter is over.
We always receive our chicks from a hatchery at one day old, and get them out on the pasture as soon as possible. Our first batch of peeps always stays in the brooder longer simply because this time of year the weather is unpredictable. After a week, we will start to add grass to their diet by scattering handfuls over their regular feed. This encourages them to eat their greens first…which they happily do!
For the next week or so they need to remain in the warm brooder to get strong and grow. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can get them outside eating bugs and worms as soon as their ready.
